What does blepharoplasty involve?
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic with sedation and takes one to two hours depending on whether one or both lids are treated. On the upper lid, incisions are placed within the natural crease so they are all but invisible once healed; on the lower lid they are hidden just beneath the lash line or inside the lid. Excess skin is removed and fat is either removed or repositioned to smooth the transition to the cheek, refreshing the eye without changing its shape.
What is recovery like after eyelid surgery?
Recovery is quicker than many patients expect. Bruising and swelling are most noticeable in the first few days and largely settle over one to two weeks, after which most people are comfortable returning to work and social life. Cool compresses and keeping the head elevated help in the early days. Vision may be a little blurred initially from ointment, and you should avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. The fine incision lines fade steadily to become very difficult to see.
