About Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can cause genuine physical symptoms — neck, back, and shoulder pain, grooving from bra straps, skin irritation beneath the breast, and difficulty exercising — alongside self-consciousness. Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin and reshapes what remains into a lighter, firmer, more proportionate breast. It is one of the most satisfying procedures in plastic surgery precisely because it improves how patients feel physically as much as how they look.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction?

Breast reduction suits adults whose breast size is causing physical symptoms — back, neck, or shoulder pain, shoulder grooving, rashes beneath the breast — or who are limited and self-conscious because of their size. Good candidates are in good general health, non-smokers or willing to stop, and ideally at a stable weight, since significant weight change can alter breast size afterwards. Mr. Khalil assesses your symptoms and goals to plan a reduction that relieves discomfort while achieving a balanced, natural shape.

What does breast reduction involve?

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes two to three hours. Mr. Khalil removes excess tissue, fat, and skin, lifts and reshapes the remaining breast, and repositions the nipple to a natural height so the result is both lighter and better shaped. Incisions are planned to reshape the breast effectively while keeping scarring as limited as the reduction allows. Because the breast is lifted as part of the reduction, patients gain a firmer, more youthful profile as well as a smaller size.

What is recovery like after breast reduction?

Most people take around three to five weeks before returning fully to normal activities, with lighter, desk-based work often possible sooner. A supportive surgical bra is worn to aid healing and comfort, and the relief from the weight of the breasts is often noticed almost immediately. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are avoided for about six weeks. Scars are firm and pink at first and fade steadily over twelve to eighteen months.

FAQ

Breast Reduction — frequently asked questions

Can breast reduction relieve back and neck pain?expand_more

Frequently, yes. Removing the excess weight often eases the neck, back, and shoulder pain and the shoulder grooving that large breasts cause — one of the main reasons patients choose it.

Will breast reduction leave scars?expand_more

Reshaping the breast requires incisions, so some scarring is unavoidable. It is planned to be as limited as the reduction allows and fades considerably over twelve to eighteen months.

Will my breasts be lifted as well as reduced?expand_more

Yes. A lift is an inherent part of a reduction — the remaining tissue is reshaped and the nipple repositioned, giving a firmer, more youthful profile as well as a smaller size.

Could I still breastfeed after a reduction?expand_more

Breastfeeding may be possible but can be affected by a reduction. If this is important to you, tell Mr. Khalil at consultation so it can be considered in planning.
